Economists say the growing protectionist stance of the current US administration has potentially negative implications for trade welfare in many African countries including South Africa. The US has been at loggerheads with China over the imposition of trade tariffs on imported goods from either of the countries leading to tension in world markets. South Africa’s trade benefits under the current African Growth Opportunity Act (AGOA) of 2000 could potentially devastate many sectors that have benefited under the Act, with profound social impacts. Today we ask, has AGOA benefited the South African economy or presented it with challenges and problems?
To discuss this we are joined by Professor Nhlanhla Cyril Nhlanhla Mbatha, from Unisa Graduate School of Business Leadership.
