Cape Town is one of the most dangerous cities in the world, and it has the highest murder rate in South Africa. Since January more than 2000 people have been murdered.
Most murders and other types of violent crime are linked to gang activity in the Cape Flats. ‘The Flats’, as they are called locally, are an area of densly packed townships on the outskirts of the city.
But Cape Town isn’t the only South African city affected. The city of Johannesburg is plagued by xenophobic violence. Businesses in the inner city are struggling to keep the doors open amid as economic downturn in Africa’s most developed economy. Popular arts and culture hub Maboneng is particularly feeling the pinch. Putting a decade of work in rejuvenating the former slum area under serious threat. Authorities battle to contain a week of riots and looting, while visitors cancel planned trips.
